                 Telangana state accounts for 3.5% of India’s total geographical area and 2.9% of India’s total population. It ranks 12^th position in terms of geographical area as well as population. The newly formed Telangana state, as 29^th State of India, is blessed with rich livestock resource especially cattle and sheep population accounting for 5.5% of countries cattle and sheep population. Around 2.9 million families depend on livestock sector for their livelihood and  Livestock sector is emerging as one of the most potential and income generating sector for rural and semi urban areas.

                As per 2012 livestock census there are 5.03 million Cattle (13^th rank in India), 4.19 million Buffaloes (13^th rank in India), 12.9 million sheep (2^nd rank in India), 4.68 million Goats (13^th rank in India), Total 27.04 million livestock (10^th rank in India). Rural Poultry accounts for 13.42 million (6^th rank in India) and commercial Poultry accounts for 55.64 million (4^th rank in India). Livestock contributes about 4.86% to state GDP.

               Telangana stands at 3^rd position in egg production in the country with an annual egg production of 9420 million eggs. The annual meat production stands at 0.43 million MTs (6^th position in India) and Milk production at 3.95 million MTs (13^th position in India).

              Water Spread Area in the State for fisheries is 5.91 Lakhs MTs (0.59 million) Ha (3rd rank in India) and fish production per annum is 2.20 Lakh MTs (0.22 million) (8th rank in India). There are 8 major reservoirs, 17 medium reservoirs, and 53 small reservoirs in the state. There are 438 perennial tanks, 3,212 long seasonal tanks and 31, 381 short duration tanks. Number of Aquaculture ponds are 474.  There are 3,345 Fishermen Cooperative Societies in the State with a membership of 2,13,990.  

            The mandate of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries department is to increase the availability of animal origin food like milk, meat, fish and eggs for human consumption through scientific breeding, feeding and disease management through:

1. Livestock Breed improvement through cross breeding

2. Nutritious feed and fodder development  for livestock

3. Health care of Livestock

4. Disease diagnosis, prevention, control and treatment of livestock

 5. Extension and Training activities

6. Production of Quality Fish seed

7. Supply of quality Fish feed

8. Establishment of Fish markets

9. Implementation of poverty alleviation programmes for socio-economic upliftment of Below Poverty Line citizens.
